January 2014 Outing

January 16 – 19, 2014 was the first meeting of the FSWG for the new year! 51 coaches representing 7 chapters arrived for the weekend, many of them coming early to have more time to visit with friends. Most of the  weather was not typical Florida weather – near freezing temperatures – but these Winnebago coaches have great heaters and they were put to the test!!  Scraping frost off the car windshields was the first task of the days! But it was warm and cozy in the rec hall where the group attended the first activity of the day on Thursday for the early birds – Happy Hour!  Dinner was on your own and many enjoyed the various local restaurants. The park had bingo games later that evening and many of us played the games.

The theme for the weekend was an “International Festival” which included several Olympic games representing 10 different countries. Friday morning several of the attendees checked out the games and had some fun with the tasks.

At 10:00am the Board of Directors meeting was called to order by President Ted Fumia. He announced that our 2nd Vice Presidents Cliff & Ree Spiller were not in attendance due to illness. Ted introduced the newest chapter presidents in the room, David Nobert & Janice Cummings, Caloosa Winnies;  Jeff & Sara Roudebush, Mid-Florida Winnies; and Bill Schilp, Suncoast Winnies. Much of the meeting discussion was concerning our upcoming March Rally with all the details necessary for the members to be aware of including some tasks given to chapters to help make this rally our usual success.

At 4:00pm it was time for Happy Hour and the official Olympic Opening Ceremonies. Ted & Janis Fumia, Jerry & Nancy Miller – wearing toga costumes, carrying torches and parading around the room while the Olympic music was playing brought lots of laughs from the group! The official Olympic candle was lighted as a part of the ceremony. Soon it was time for the pizza party – and free adult beverages which was a big hit with the attendees. The Ice Cream Social was held as soon as the pizza was gone – and thanks to our “scoopers” the lines went fast and everyone made their own sundaes! The rest of the evening several card games were played and everyone had a great evening!

Saturday morning the officers and volunteers were busy getting the Pancake Breakfast ready, complete with sausage and fruit. The cooks did a FABULOUS job making specialty pancakes for the crowd! At 10:30am the General business Meeting was brought to order by President Ted Fumia. Ted welcomed all the members and guests, and thanked them for coming in spite of the cold weather! Much of the meeting discussions were regarding our upcoming March Rally which will be a fun and exciting event!

The rest of the day was free time with many people playing the Olympic games. Happy Hour was held at 4:00pm, followed by our International Dinner. This was quite an event with so many GREAT dishes provided by the participants! Specialty contributions included German, Irish, Italian, French, Chinese, Hungarian, so many choices we used 4 big tables to spread it out! It was a GREAT feast and we thanked everyone who contributed!

Soon it was time for the Olympics closing ceremony, which again found Ted & Janis, Jerry & Nancy dressed in their costumes parading around the room to the music. The ceremonies were concluded with the extinguishing of the candle flame. Next on the agenda was the medal ceremony.

Gold Medal winners in various categories  were  Butch Crosby, Walt Carroll, Bruce Cinader, Peter Ward, Gayle Putman, Bob Olson, Helen Jette, Joan Krajack, Sylvia Smith, Edwin VanValkenburg,  and Margaret Schlitt. Overall point winners were: Gold – Gloria Caffrey, Silver- Bob Olson and Bronze- Vangie Cinader.

Next on the agenda was our Brown Bag Auction. Jack Caffrey and Edwin VanValkenburg showed their auction skills by entertaining the group with their humor and making it such a fun time! Each couple brought a package in a brown bag and the variety of “gifts” was just amazing! It was a fun event and THANKS to everyone who bought a package!

Sunday morning we met once again in the rec hall to share a breakfast of donuts, bagels and fruit. Soon it was to go our separate ways. THANKS to everyone who joined us and we invite any one to attend out meetings. Please check out website www.winniegators.org for future dates, or WITclub.com Who’s Inviting Travelers. Our next event will be the March rally in Orlando – we’ll see you there!
